ABOUT US

Klawerjas Club is a vibrant community dedicated to the popular Dutch four-player, trick-taking card game, Klawerjas. Nestled within the South African culture, our club provides a social space for members to gather, discuss strategies, and engage in competitive play. Join us for weekly game nights and exciting open tournaments, and be a part of the rich heritage established by the Southern Suburbs Klawerjas Union (SSKU) in 1994.

SSKU HISTORY

THE COMING INTO EXISTENCE OF THE UNION:

Mr. SAM KAPOT: was the overriding driving force behind the establishment of a third Klawerjas Union within the Cape Peninsula. He was the first Chairman of the union and a founding member and former chairman of theSouth African Klawerjas Board Of Control (SAKBOC).

The inaugural meeting of SSKU was held at the Grassy Park Hotel in February 1994. The Retreat Hotel in
Retreat, Cape Town, was the place where formal/competitive klawerjas in South Africa started. The Retreat Hotel was apparently not available for the launch of S.S.K.U.

The Founding Clubs:

Eagles, Omega, Rebels, Scorpions, Trevira, Grassy Park, and Westlake.

During the first season the Union’s Constitution was finalized, a badge/emblem was adopted, application for SAKBOC affiliation was successful, and Union Colours was agreed upon. Trevira K.C. was granted clearance from MPKU and certain members of the Grassy Park K.C. had to obtain clearances from SPKU.

The Badge:

A small piece of cloth bearing a design to be worn to indicate membership of the organization.

The Design:

The founding –fathers opted for one of the existing images of the mythical bird the PHOENIX.

THE PHOENIX: There are many counterparts of the phoenix bird but the most well known is the Classical Arabian Phoenix. The phoenix flies far ahead to the front, always scanning the landscape and distant space.

The bird is covered with brilliant scarlet and gold plumage. The phoenix would build a pyre nest of romantic branches and spices such as myrrh, sets it on fire and is consumed by the flames. The phoenix is a mythical bird which is cyclically regenerated or reborn. It is associated with the sun and obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor.

SYMBOLIC VALUE OF THE PHOENIX: Formal/competitive klawerjas started at the Retreat Hotel in Retreat, Cape Town. Thereafter it moved to various other venues throughout the Cape Peninsula. The establishment of S.S.K.U. at the time was like the phoenix rising from the ashes. From Grassy Park Hotel in Grassy Park, Klawerjas went back to the “home of klawerjas”, the Retreat Hotel in May 2001. Because of the efforts to involve the youth in the sport, klawerjas, within the fold, is no longer being played at hotels. Instead all the unions utilize a Cape Town City Council facility as a venue for playing the game.

2002 was the year when 4 clubs joined the Union i.e. Heatherley K.C., Square Hill K.C., Flames K.C. and Classic K.C. That was the year when Thirteen clubs and Fourteen teams necessitated the creation of an “A” and “B” section.
